Fried Green Tomatoes
Ingredients
- 3ā4 firm green tomatoes, sliced ¼-inch thick
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
Breading
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornmeal (or cornmeal + breadcrumbs)
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp cayenne (optional)
Egg Wash
- 2 large eggs
- ¼ cup milk or buttermilk
For Frying
- Vegetable oil or peanut oil
Instructions
1. Prep Tomatoes
- Slice tomatoes and lightly salt them.
- Let sit 5ā10 minutes, then pat dry.
2. Set Up Dredging Station
- Bowl 1: flour
- Bowl 2: whisked eggs + milk
- Bowl 3: cornmeal, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne, pepper
3. Bread the Tomatoes
- Dip each slice in flour ā egg wash ā cornmeal mixture.
- Press coating on well.
4. Fry
- Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a skillet.
- Fry tomatoes in batches 2ā3 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Drain on paper towels.
5. Serve Hot
